Among our exciting plans for Birmingham New Music Festival 2017 is a partnership with Birmingham Metro Music Forum through which BAMA composers will write new music for performance by Birmingham-area private piano students.

BMMF is a local organization of private music teachers that is affiliated with the Music Teachers National Association and the Alabama Music Teachers Association. A few months ago it came to our attention that BMMF was also producing a Birmingham New Music Festival, featuring recently composed music in performances by private (mostly piano) students. Seeing an opportunity for mutually beneficial cooperation, we reached out to BMMF and made plans for collaboration. Through this collaboration, BMMF students get new music written for them by local composers; BAMA composers explore new challenges and reach new audiences.

The members of BMMF have provided us with the number of interested students at each level of difficulty. We want to be sure that we write one piece for every interested student. We have created a Google DOC (a web-based spreadsheet) to keep track of which students have already been chosen by one of our composers.  To ensure that we write music of appropriate difficulty, the teachers of BMMF have also provided us with a guide to difficulty levels (“Examples of Piano Rep Levels”).
